Implanon insertion

The contraceptive implant is a small flexible plastic rod that is placed just under the skin in your upper arm. It is often referred to as 'the bar'. It releases a progestogen hormone similar to the natural progesterone that is produced in the ovaries. It prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg and is effective for up to three years. Once removed the hormone levels drop rapidly back to normal so fertility returns very quickly.

The implant is over 99% effective and is 100% reversible.

It is inserted using local anaesthetic and can be done soon after giving birth even if you are breastfeeding. Ideally the insertion should be day 1-5 of your menstrual cycle.

For those aged 17-30 years this service is free of charge under the new government contraceptive scheme.
